I was tasked with choosing and existing poster from a prominent Pictorial Modernism designer to serve as a reference for my own design. I chose Münchener Fashings Redoute by Julius Klinger. Like the reference, this poster features a figure that is primarily the same color as the background made visible by its surrounding elements. While the reference featured far less text, it was nonetheless all placed at the bottom of the poster, which I replicated in my own poster.

I was tasked with choosing and existing poster from a prominent Russian Constructivism designer to serve as a reference for my own design. I chose Postcard for the All Union Spartakiada Sporting Event by Gustav Klutsis. I was also instructed to choose a contemporary issue to focus the poster on. I chose the topic of mass surveillance. Like the reference poster, I chose to adhere the text and much of the imagery to a slanted angle. Recognizing that texture was an important part of the reference poster, I scanned physical newspaper cutouts for some of the imagery, and attempted to replicate a newspaper texture in the rest.

I was tasked with choosing and existing poster from a prominent Bauhaus designer to serve as a reference for my own design. I chose Bauhaus Ausstellung Weimar by László Moholy-Nagy. While the shapes featured in the reference poster are entirely abstract in their placement, I chose to create a composition that references the iconic Tea Infuser and Strainer by Bauhaus artist Marianne Brandt, while still appearing largely abstract to those that are unfamiliar with the object. I chose type that mimics the handmade appearance of the reference poster, and placed it in accordance with the reference poster’s placement.
